New Purple Mattress Review 2020

New Purple Mattress

Why choose Purple? Before we delve deeper into the bed, let’s go over the story that has defined its creation. Purple has a rich history. Two brothers who are also engineers, Tony, and Terry Pearce, went into the cushioning business, licensing their work to big companies like Nike and Johnson & Johnson. They were a smashing success.

Along the way, they developed a technology that would be seen in products the world over, such as beds in Europe and Japan. This is the Hyper-Elastic Polymer, a soft yet strong material that can stretch 15 times its resting size. It’s also durable and resilient. In 2014, the Pearce brothers set out to produce it in large quantities with low manufacturing costs.

This was the beginning of Purple beds. The Original Purple Mattress was a hit. But the company always seeks to up the ante. So now we also have the All-New Purple Mattress. Read our New Purple Mattress review to find out why it’s better.

The New Purple Mattress Review – Unbiased & Updated

Construction & Materials

Purple claims that its technology is the only real innovation in the last 40 years. While this may sound like a stretch, it is not pure marketing. The Pearce brothers were onto something when they introduced the Hyper-Elastic Polymer. It would become the basis for the Smart Comfort Grid, an open grid system that is found inside the All-New Purple Mattress.

This top layer flexes under your pressure points, providing firm support. For instance, this applies under your shoulders and hips. It then gently supports the rest of your body. As a result, you experience optimal comfort as pressure point sores are eliminated. A soft cover that’s also stretchy and breathable complements the benefits of the Smart Comfort Grid.

Sitting beneath the open grid structure is the individually encased coils that give the bed endurance against daily wear and tear. It also reinforces the dynamic pressure relief and support offered by the open grid layer. It doesn’t end here. A mesh-wrapped base serves as the foundation of this mattress, keeping it ventilated and stable. These materials harmoniously perform to deliver superior comfort to the sleeper.

We love how Purple blends engineering science and the art of mattress making to advance the way its bed improves sleep quality. The Hyper-Elastic Polymer has been known to deal with pressure sores with success. It is not perfect–no tech is–but it makes for an ideal solution.

Firmness & Feel

Firmness is a top indicator in the mattress industry of how suitable a model it is for you. It is so important that there is a guideline created to help both brands and customers determine the firmness and softness of a bed. This is the Firmness Scale from 1 to 10. The universal comfort is placed between 5 and 7, sometimes 4.5 and 7.

Here is a legend to give you an idea:

1 is soft, 10 is firm

Ultra Soft – 1-2
Soft – 3-4
Medium – 5-6
Firm – 7-8
Ultra Firm – 9-10

We’d like to add that this scale is helpful in particular to those who are shopping for online mattresses. However, do note that some companies have varying versions or interpretations of this scale. But the middle parts usually represent the firmness that caters to many sleeper types, shapes, and sizes. A few use the reversed scale in which 1 is firmest and 10 is softest.

The good thing about the New Purple Mattress is that it comes in multiple firmness options. This is an upgrade from the sole 6.5 (Medium Firm) option that the Original Purple provides. The latest model has 3 thickness choices as well: 11 inches, 12 inches, and 13 inches. Here are their corresponding firmness levels:

  • 11 inches – 6.5 (Medium Firm)
  • 12 inches – 5.5 (Medium)
  • 13 inches – 4.5 (Medium Soft)

Breathability or air circulation has been a problem for memory foam mattresses. The traditional memory foam, as well as all-foam designs, tends to trap body heat. This causes what we call “sleeping hot”. But this is one of the things that the New Purple’s Smart Comfort Grid promises to resolve. The open grid design allows for the air to flow freely. It also dissipates body heat.

But we think that there is more to the construction of the latest Purple bed. The individual coil system has something to do with its better airflow promotion performance. After all, hybrids are known to advance breathability because of their spring systems. So here, the Smart Comfort Grid and coil system work together to achieve proper ventilation for the entire bed.

Further, the base sports a breathable, mesh-based material. We are not surprised that this edition has components that work hard to keep you cool while you snooze. This is already a strong point in the original. As this one is an upgrade, it should definitely carry on with that tradition, if not boost it.

Edge Support & Sinkage

Edge support is not a main draw for the Original Purple. It performs poorly in this area. While it employs the Smart Comfort Grid, its all-foam construction is not enough to prevent premature sinkage. And it is not stable enough at the perimeter for those who roll over in their sleep. These 2 things are what its successor seeks to address.

The All-New Purple Mattress is a hybrid. And this mattress type is known for its enhanced edge support. The coil system adds durability to the bed itself. And because it also has sprung at the perimeter, this layer strengthens that part.

This actually has a tangible effect in terms of surface area. You’d feel like the bed has more space. If you’re sharing the mattress with someone else, there’s no need to hog the middle zone. You can roll over to the edge all you want without fear of falling over.

Aside from stability, you can also rely on its durability. Sinkage is not going to be a problem for those who like sitting on the edge. We know people who lace up their shoes, gazing through the window, and whatnot at this area. Whatever you do, your mattress should be able to support you and withstand daily wear.

Motion Transfer

For those who haven’t heard about motion transfer, this is the term used to describe the transfer of movements from one part of the mattress to another. Usually, this won’t be an issue if you’re sleeping solo. But when you have a bedmate and one of you is a light sleeper, it’s easy to see why this can cause interruptions. In turn, it will affect sleep quality.

It is for the above reason that motion transfer is considered an important aspect in modern bed design. Old spring systems used to transfer motion a lot. The bounce may feel nice, but the shifting of your partner may border toward annoying, especially if you’re trying to catch some zzzs.

With the Smart Comfort Grid, you can rest assured that motion is isolated significantly. This means that if your partner is shifting positions in the middle of their sleep, you won’t feel little to anything of their movements. This is great news not only for light sleepers but also for those suffering from sleep disorders, such as insomnia. Sometimes, your anxiety rises when the other person is tossing and turning.

Hybrids are the pricier lot among the mattress types. This is reasonable because of the power combo of foam and spring. It just follows that the prices of the New Purple Mattress vs the Original Purple is heavier on the pocket. Where you can already own a King Original Purple for $1,299, that’s only the starting price for the New Purple. Here’s a breakdown of the prices for your reference.

New Purple Mattress Review: Prices

Twin XL – $1,299
Full – $1,499
Queen – $1,599
King – $1,899
Cal King – $1,899

While it looks more expensive at face value, you’ll see that this model is more affordable than other online hybrid mattress options on the market. For example, the Tempur-Pedic Flex Hybrid Mattress starts at $1,999 (Queen). Thing is, you can get the luxury hybrid feels for a few hundred bucks less.

But we aren’t giving the latest Purple the highest score because there are also some worthy competitors that are offering similar models for less. You have the Classic Saatva Mattress and Alexander Signature Hybrid Mattress for example. Still, the value of the New Purple Mattress is matched with its pricing. It is not overpriced like other retail store versions. And financing is available.

Other Factors

This New Purple Mattress review won’t be complete without the following factors:

In addition to the factors above, you should also check out for trial periods. This is especially basic when you are buying a mattress online. You cannot test out the bed prior to purchase. You might as well get a risk-free trial night to make sure you have the right fit. A 100-night trial comes with your New Purple order. That’s equivalent to at least 3 months, which isn’t bad.

Tied to this is the return policy of the company. You cannot afford to shoulder pickup and return costs. That’s because you’re paying for something that you are no longer going to use. It’s a bit all right if the amount gets deducted from your full refund. It makes sense because you have already tried the bed. But it’s best if pickup and return costs are on the company.

With Purple, this is one less headache for you, as it promises to handle the expenses. How about when the bed is inbound? Of course, the shipping is free of charge. Specifically, it’s free white glove delivery with in-home setup. If you fell in love with the All-New Purple Mattress, you are also entitled to a 10-year limited warranty. Sweet.

Why You Should Buy the All-New Purple Mattress

Do you sleep hot? Through our New Purple Mattress review, we’re pleased to report that the New Purple has an incredible performance when it comes to promoting airflow. Thanks to the Smart Comfort Grid, it dissipates body heat so you won’t sweat the bed as you used to in your old mattress. So grab this chance.

We also recommend this model for all kinds of sleepers. The multiple firmness options mean you can customize the feel of the bed based on your sleeping position. You can go firmer if you’re a back or stomach sleeper. Side sleepers can go for medium. The open grid’s dynamic support makes sure your pressure points are relieved as you hit the sack.

Couples would also benefit from this bed because of its great motion isolation capabilities. If you’re a light sleeper with a partner who shifts positions in bed, then you’re not hopeless. With the New Purple, you can feel little to no motion at all from other parts of the bed.

Why You Should Not Buy the All-New Purple Mattress

The first thing that can deter buyers is the price of the New Purple Mattress. Its starting rate is at least double the starting rate of its predecessor. If you have no budget for a hybrid above $1,200, then this one is not for you. Unless, of course, you apply for financing. This can lessen the burden a little. And you get to enjoy the great benefits of this bed.

If you sleep solo or are starting out, this bed may prove too heavy to be moved around. This is not ideal for those who have back conditions. You may get help from other people as a workaround. But if you also like changing things up in your room once in a while, this will not be efficient.

If you lean on the heavier side, the firmness and thickness options may be limited for you. So you better look for something that is created specifically for your weight category. Although this doesn’t entirely mean you can’t try the Medium Firm version of the New Purple.

The Verdict

The All-New Purple Mattress is clearly an upgrade of the Original Purple Mattress. Its hybrid design is more advanced, improving support, breathability, edge support, and durability. The Smart Comfort Grid is an innovation that sets itself apart from the multitudes of brands promising good performance out there. At the same time, it is boosted by the addition of the coil system as the support layer.

If the price can be more affordable, the bed will continue the vision of its founders of serving premium mattresses to millions. In the meantime, it is available to those who are eligible for financing or have the budget to spend on a hybrid. Still, the All-New Purple Mattress is one of the best options in its category. And the stars it has earned from us tell that story.

We hope this has helped you better understand the New Purple, as well as Purple in general. For more mattress brand reviews, stay tuned here at
