Mattress Size Chart & Mattress Dimensions

Buying a new bed is an exciting experience. But before you begin, it is important to take into consideration all the different options available to you concerning the size of the bed, and all of the benefits that go along with each size. The size you choose is an individual decision in the end, but having an understanding of the sizing dimensions of each mattress size will help guide you toward the best decision for the needs of you and your family. When looking into what size mattress would best suit you, it is important to consider not only the dimensions of the mattress, but also whether or not someone else will be sleeping in the bed with you, if children or pets will be in the bed, the height of the individual sleepers, and the dimensions of your bedroom. It is a good idea to write down your bedroom dimensions before you go bed shopping so that you can see how much space each bed will take up in your room.

Mattress Size Chart

Mattresses are typically measured in inches in the United States, with more attention given to length and height, although depth is equally important when it comes to considering how high off the ground your bed will stand, as well as in purchasing fitted sheets. Because an “industry standard” does not exist for mattress depth, it can range anywhere from four inches for bunk beds to over 20 inches for king size mattresses. As such, it is important to ask about the mattress depth when making your purchase.

Crib Mattress Dimensions

Used for infants and most toddlers, this type of mattress comes at 27 inches wide and 52 inches long. Because this is the standard size used throughout the United States, these mattresses will fit any standard crib you may purchase. In order to ensure for the proper safety of the child using it, these mattresses are firmer than mattresses made for adult use. However, the mattress is similar to other options available in that they come in foam or innerspring options. In addition, some are lighter, making these a better option if you are looking for portability, while others are easier to clean spills off of.

Twin Mattress Dimensions

Designed to fit an average child or single adult, the typical twin sized mattress will measure around 39 inches wide and 75 inches long, as well as between eight and 10 inches deep. Because of their slim size, they are easily fit next to each other or on top of each other as bunk beds, making them a great option for children who share a room. They are also a good option for guest rooms or rooms that are not traditionally shaped because of their smaller size.

Traditional bunk bed mattresses hold the same dimensions as a twin, but with considerably less depth at only four inches.

Twin XL Mattress Dimensions

A taller adult may want to consider purchasing a twin XL bed, as these mattresses offer an additional five inches of leg room at the bottom, for a total of 80 inches. This type of mattress is considered to be the standard for college dorm rooms across the United States. While they do not offer any additional sleeping space width-wise, the mattresses are often also used in children’s bedrooms to offer more length for growing kids. Although these mattresses are both an economical option and able to be easily transferred from dorm room to apartment, many adults will opt for a larger bed size once available space allows.

Best For:

  • When your child becomes too big for a crib, the next step is to move them to a big kid’s bed. A queen or king option may be too big, but you also don’t want to settle with a twin. The twin XL serves as a middle ground for parents as the length is ideal for factoring in a growth spurt.
  • Dorms and apartments usually have smaller spaces than typical bedrooms. So, for college kids, the measurements of the twin XL work. This mattress size can also be used on bunk beds. It is a practical choice for students who are also looking to save up.
  • For couples who like to enjoy their chosen firmness, a split king type seems the perfect solution. Some bed models come in this size. But you can also create your own by pairing two twin XL mattresses.

Standard Mattress Dimensions

Standard mattress dimensions

Commonly referred to as a full or double mattress, the standard mattress measures 54 inches wide, 75 inches long, and has an average depth of between eight and 12 inches. When two people are sleeping side-by-side on this type of mattress, each user has a total of 27 inches of sleeping space, or about the same amount as an average crib mattress.

The mattress was once considered to be the most accepted mattress for couples in their homes, as many houses were smaller back then. This is not the case today however. As house sizes began to grow, couples began to gravitate toward queen-sized mattresses for bed sharing. Standard mattresses are now sought after by single adults or children who are looking for additional sleeping space. It is considered to be a good concession when a decision cannot be made between twin and queen mattress sizes. Teenagers may appreciate the additional space offered in a full mattress over a twin, while adults living in smaller apartments will likely enjoy saving space over larger mattress options.

Queen Mattress Dimensions

The most popular mattress size currently sold in the United States, the queen mattress measures 60 inches wide by 80 inches long, offering a total of 30 inches of sleeping space for each person on the bed. The depth of the mattress is typically between 12 and 17 inches. The mattress is considered to be the most versatile option available, providing enough sleeping space for each individual laying on the mattress while taking up less bedroom space, making it a great option for smaller bedrooms. Because of this, it is a mattress that will not be quickly outgrown, and fits in most master bedrooms.

The bed is often suggested for couples who do not have the space in their bedroom for a king size. Because of its popularity, accessories and bedding are widely available for queen mattresses, in a variety of styles, materials, and price points.

King Mattress Dimensions

King Mattress Size

There are two types of king mattresses currently available. The traditional model, also referred to as the “eastern king”, is 80 inches long, the same length as a queen, but is 16 inches wider for a total of 76 inches. The mattress comes with an average depth of between 10 and 21 inches, or more. The bed is a great option for sleepers who need their space at night as it offers each user the same amount of space as a twin-sized bed.

The other option available, the California King is slightly less wide at 72 inches, but is 84 inches long, making it the best choice for taller people who are over six feet in height. Because of this, a special frame may need to be purchased. This type of mattress typically comes with the same depth range as the eastern king. If you have previously suffered from having your feet hang off the bed as you sleep, this is the mattress for you! In addition, because the mattress is slightly narrower than the traditional king bed, it may be able to fit more easily in smaller bedrooms than the other option on the market today.

The king bed is considered to be the best choice out there for couples who like to spread out as they sleep, people with pets, or families who co-sleep with their children.

However, king beds take up the most room in the bedroom, and this should be taken into consideration when making your final purchase. While its larger size does make the bed difficult to move from house to house, the mattress rests on two twin box springs, which does allow for easier movement within your bedroom.

Tips For Mattress Sizing

When considering which mattress to purchase, keep in mind that it is highly suggested that the mattress by at least 10cm longer than the height of the person who will be using it.

In terms of mattress width, make sure you are able to put both of your hands comfortably under your head. While in this position, your elbows should not be resting on the edges of the mattress or touching the person next to you.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a Full Size Bed the Same as a Double?

A double bed is another term for a full-size bed. It’s okay to have them interchange as long as those you’re interacting with know that they’re one and the same. The measurements for this mattress size is 54 inches x 75 inches (width x length).

A full-size or double bed comes after twin and twin XL. But by no means does double mean twice the size of a twin mattress. For reference, a twin-size bed has the dimensions of 38 inches x 75 inches. So, it is narrower but has the same length as the double bed.

Is There a Difference When Describing the Sizes of Beds Versus Mattresses?

Bed sizes and mattress sizes are often interchangeable, especially in the world of online mattress shopping. That is because bed and mattress are used synonymously. Even Consumer Reports practices this language style.

However, to be organized, you may want to stick with mattress sizes and double-check what bed sizes mean. That’s because, in some cases, bed sizes can refer to bed frame sizes. The latter is usually slightly larger than the mattress size. And it depends on the design and structure, as in is it a platform bed or a slatted base?

Here are some standard mattress dimensions and sample bed frame measurements for comparison:

Standard Mattress Sizes

Twin: 38” x 75”
Twin XL: 38” x 80”
Full/Double: 53” x 75”
Queen: 60” x 80”
King: 76” x 80”
California King: 72” x 84”

Sample Platform Sizes

Twin: 45” x 86”
Queen: 66.5” x 86”
King: 89” x 86”

Sample Slatted Bed Frame Sizes

Twin: 40” x 81”
Full: 55.5” x 81.5”
Queen: 63” x 87”
King: 78.5” x 87.5”
California King: 74.25” x 90.5”

What Size Mattress Do Two Side-by-Side Twin Beds Make?

Two twin mattresses placed side-by-side can make one king bed (technically, a split king). Although, if you add things up, the twin beds will end up a bit shorter in terms of the length. A standard twin mattress is 38 inches wide. And 38 inches x 2 is 76 inches, which is the width of a king bed. The length of a twin, however, is 75 inches while that of a king is 80 inches.

If the length is not a big deal, you can push through with this configuration. But if you require the extra legroom, you can replace the twin beds with twin XL ones. The latter will also give you 38 inches x 2 = 76 inches. Twin XL mattresses are 80 inches long, just like the king.

Why do people choose this kind of configuration, anyway? It seems a lot of work to order two twin XLs instead of one king. Actually, this will be in favor of couples or co-sleepers who want to customize the firmness of their side of the bed. For instance, your partner wants a soft surface while you prefer a firm one. This split-firmness setting can help you reach a compromise.

What About the Other Sizes of Mattresses, like Texas or Super King?

Aside from standard-size mattresses, there are specialty mattresses that have emerged throughout the years. These are manufactured by a small number of brands.

A super king refers to a large mattress in the United Kingdom. With dimensions of 71 inches x 78 inches. You can liken it to a California king in the United States. Meanwhile, the Texas king is one of the oversized versions, even bigger than the super king.

Here are a few other examples of oversized mattresses:

Wyoming king – This is the smallest among the lot. It measures 84 inches x 84 inches, placing it at the same length as the California king. However, it is wider. This allows for more sleeping space for couples or a growing family.

Texas king – With dimensions of 80 inches x 98 inches, the Texas king strikes a balance between its length and width. Yet, its almost-square-like design makes it ideal for fitting in several sleepers.

Alaskan king – This bed size is by far the largest in the United States. It measures 108 x 108 inches. It is 24 inches wider than the Wyoming king, allowing for the entire family to move without feeling cramped. Also, it is 24 inches longer, so you won’t have to worry about legroom.

Take note that it may not be easy to look for bedding for specialty and oversized mattresses like those three.

Is a Full Size Bed Big Enough for 2 People?

In general, it would not be enough.

Up until the 1960s, the full-size or double bed was the most common size that could accommodate two sleepers. With a width of 54 inches, each person only had 27 inches of space to themselves. If you were a side sleeper and did not toss and turn at night, it would have been well and great.

Imagine the scenario if you slept like starfish. There wasn’t any space to move around. Of course, couples could snuggle together. But it was still less than ideal if you wanted to maximize the sleeping space you shared with your partner.

This does not mean that you should not be buying a full-size bed if you’re a couple. There are circumstances that can force people to settle with this one. For instance, if you live in an apartment that can only fit a mattress this big, then you can make do with the dimensions. Also, if your budget requires you to choose the most practical option, a double mattress fits the bill.

What’s the Most Popular Mattress Size?

According to Statista, the most popular mattress size across all age groups is the queen bed. Almost half of Americans prefer to sleep on a queen-size mattress. It records the highest percentage among 30 to 59 years old. But it is quite popular among young people (18 to 29 years old) at 42%. When it comes to the elderly, 48% also snooze on a mattress this big.

Overall, the second most popular is king at 19% and full at 14%. With this in mind, you can say that queen mattresses dominate the market. Its measurements fit a master’s bedroom that is 10 x 10 square feet at the least.

What’s the Largest Mattress Available?

Among the standard sizes in the United States, the king is the largest mattress available. It measures 76 inches x 80 inches. Similarly, the California king can also be called the largest because of its longer profile. At 72 inches x 84 inches, it can fit narrower rooms better than king.

In the United Kingdom, the equivalent of a California king is a super king.

Still, there are larger mattresses than these two. These are the Wyoming king, Texas king, and Alaska king. You can check out their dimensions above (see: “What About the Other Sizes of Mattresses, like Texas or Super King?”).

Considering these rare and unique sizes, the largest mattress is the Alaskan king. It is a whopping 108 inches x 108 inches’ worth of sleeping surface. To give you an idea, the most popular mattress size queen can fit in a 10 x 10 square-foot room. The Alaskan king is 9 x 9 square feet.

Considering how big the latter is, it is also likely to be used in an unusually large room. Typically, the Alaskan king accommodates a family who likes to snooze side-by-side, especially if there are little ones.

Is the California King Bigger than the King?

These two mattress sizes do not share the same width or length. Without that one shared metric by which we can compare the other, we have to look at something else. Let’s try the surface area for each bed size. Here, we’ll have to use imperial measurements for consistency.

The California king has a surface area of 42 square feet or 6 feet x 7 feet. The king has a surface area of 6.3 feet x 6.7 feet or 42 square feet (when rounded down). Now, we have the same metric to apply for comparison. And, it turns out, the king and Cal king have the same surface area when the values are rounded: 42 feet!

We can say that no one is significantly larger than the other. But the king is still slightly larger than the Cal king.

Remember that we got these numbers by converting inches to feet. Using this criterion, we’d end up with the same result as well. We know that a king measures 76 inches x 80 inches, which gives you a surface area of 6,080 square inches. Cal king’s dimensions are 72 inches x 84 inches. That leaves you with a surface area of 6,048 square inches.

If you want to apply the metric figures, you can refer to them below:

King: 193 cm x 203 cm – a surface area of 39,226 sq. cm; or 1.9 meters x 2 meters – a surface area of 3.9 square meters

California king: 83 cm x 213 cm – a surface area of ~39,019 sq. cm; or 1.83 meters x 2.13 meters – a surface area of 3.9 square meters

Are There Any More Sizes of Mattresses?

So far, we know about the most common mattress sizes: twin, twin XL, full, queen, king, and California king. The rare ones also make an appearance, starting with the Wyoming king, Texas king, and Alaskan king. Super king is to the U.K. as Cal king is to the U.S. But, what else are you missing?

Let’s not forget the mattresses made for babies and toddlers. These are specifically designed to accommodate newborns and tiny tots. We are referring to the crib mattress and toddler mattress. Both have the same size: 28 inches x 52 inches. But they serve two different purposes.

A crib mattress works within a crib frame. It is typically firm to keep the baby from suffocating if they happen to lie on their backs. You can make your infant sleep on this one, with your supervision. Once your baby reaches 18 months or becomes tall enough (around 3 feet) to climb out of the crib, it’s time to switch to a toddler bed.

Meanwhile, the softer toddler bed is created for growing babies. It provides some conformity to keep the toddler comfortable and compatibility with many toddler bed frames.

What’s the Difference Between a Twin and a Single Mattress?

The names of this mattress size may cause some confusion. But single and twin beds refer to the same size. At 38 inches by 75 inches, they are both designed for solo sleepers. As they fit with ease in a small room, they’re a favorite choice for children’s rooms and guestrooms. These are pretty functional and can serve your kid up until they reach high school.

But you may be asking: why settle for two confusing names? This is because of a slight difference in use. Twin beds often come in two units, placed parallel to each other in hotel rooms. They can also be put beside each other for co-sleepers and then taken apart when they want to sleep separately.

What Is the Difference Between a King and a California King?

While these two are almost of the same size, there are a few differences between them. A king bed is wider than a California king. But the latter is longer. King’s dimensions are 76 inches x 80 inches while those of Cal king are 74 inches x 82 inches.

The wider size can prioritize the number of sleepers. For instance, a couple can rely on it for less restriction of movements. It’s also fairly comfortable for a growing family, aka a couple with a small child or a pet. California king, on the other hand, makes for an ideal option for odd layouts; that is, the room is rather long and narrow. And it can serve tall people who need more legroom.

When their surface areas are measured using the imperial system, king and Cal king cover 6,080 inches and 6,048 inches, respectively. These can fit a 10 x 10 square-foot room, leaving little space for other stuff. If you have a bigger room, then it may be more suitable for you.

Lastly, California King also goes by Western king. Meanwhile, some name king the Eastern king perhaps to make a distinction. But the dimensions define these sizes more than geography. And the former should also be your basis for picking the mattress size that matches your needs.

What Is A Twin XL Bed?

With its extra legroom, the twin XL bed is a preferred size for narrow and limited spaces. Two of them can be placed side-by-side to form a split king. This non-conventional mattress size has its own benefits and purposes. Read on to see if it matches your requirements.
Dimensions

Slightly longer than the twin mattress, the twin XL bed has dimensions of 38 inches x 80 inches (width x length). The twin and twin XL sport the same width. But the latter adds 5 inches to its length. Both share the same width, but the latter is 5 inches longer. So it features the same legroom as a queen-size mattress.

Also, two twin XLs can combine and make a split king mattress. This works for couples who need different customized firmness on their side. One issue you may encounter with this size is finding bedding that fits. You can try sheets in standard king size instead.

What Is A Full Bed?

Also known as the standard double bed, the full bed is one of the standard mattress sizes available on the market. Hotel rooms usually feature full-size beds. Yet, it can fit inside an RV just the same. It balances providing enough room for sleeping with taking minimal space.
Dimensions

The measurements for this mattress size are 54 inches x 75 inches (width x length). It is shorter than a Twin XL, but also wider. It can cater to a single adult sleeper who requires more space for themselves.

A couple can co-sleep here, but that will require some negotiations. In theory, each person can cover up to 27 inches of the surface. A growing family with a baby or a pet may squeeze themselves here with a few challenges.

If you’re tall, you only have three inches’ worth of legroom as well.

Full Bed is Best For:

The full-size bed can be a practical choice for growing kids. Parents can start transitioning their little ones from the toddler bed to the grownup bed with this option. It is wide enough to offer room for a child or siblings. If you’re getting one for the long-term, it’s less expensive than a queen-size mattress.

Single adults, like college students or independent workers, can benefit from this standard size. It can especially work for those who snooze like starfish or toss around often. At 54 inches wide and 75 inches long, you can fit this in a dorm room or apartment without the area feeling too cramped.

As mentioned above, couples can take advantage of a full mattress. It is wide enough to accommodate two people. But in a limited space, the dimensions won’t take up as much space as a queen version. Besides, it is a more affordable alternative for those who are starting out.

What Is A Cal King Bed?

You know a king bed when you see one. It is also normally included in the size options of most mattress models. But California king is also offered by some brands. It is quite popular, too, since a Rihanna song has it for a title.
Dimensions

To understand what a Cal king mattress is, you have to review the dimensions of your king and queen versions. The latter two sport the same length at 80 inches. Cal king is longer at by four inches, making it an ideal choice for odd or narrow layouts. It is also 72 inches wide (72 inches x 84 inches). Approximately, it can span 6,048 inches of surface area.

Interestingly, it is also called Western King because of its prevalence in the West Coast, particularly among Hollywood buyers. It’s a good option for those who want a spacious bed or co-sleep with a partner and/or a pet or a kid.

Cal King Bed is Best For:

Cal king is suitable for individuals who sleep solo or with a partner. You can sprawl across the bed if you snooze alone. If you are a couple, you have around 36 inches of space for tossing and turning. Children or pets can also join in. But expect minimal movements.

Those whose room layout is slim can pick this design. It will leave a gap between its edge and the wall, unlike a king or queen.

Tall individuals can enjoy the extra legroom of Cal king. If you sleep alone and don’t mind its narrow surface, you can go ahead with this size.

What is the largest mattress on the market today?

While some believe the California King to be the largest option out there, it is actually a mattress known as the Alaskan King, which measures a total of 108 inches by 108 inches. For those who have bedrooms large enough to accommodate this bed, each sleeper will have 54″ of space for sleeping, the same as a full sized mattress.

What about specialty mattress sizing?

A number of “specialty” mattress sizes have popped up over the years, including “Texas” and “super king”. While they may be more difficult to find as they are not sold at every retailer, these sizes could be worth looking into if the standard sizes are not meeting your individual needs. It is important to remember in these cases though that it can be difficult to find accessories and bedding that will fit properly.

Are full sized beds different from double beds?

Full size beds hold the same dimensions as double beds, although the wording is slightly deceiving as the word “double” sounds like it would refer to a bed that is twice the size of a single bed. Although “double” and “full” both refer to a bed that is 54″x75″, the term “double” is older and is currently being replaced by most mattress manufacturers with the term “full”.

What is the difference between a twin and a single mattress?

The two words are used interchangeably for the same sized mattress, with no difference between the two. Standard dimensions for both a “twin” or “single” bed is 38″x75″.

You should also check out our guide on What is the Best Time to Buy a Mattress? before you decide to buy a mattress.

If you put two twin mattresses together, what size bed will it make?

When placed side-by-side, two twin mattresses will create similar dimensions to that of a king mattress, or 38″x75″. The similar measurements allow for the use of two twin boxsprings underneath a king mattress, offering easy portability throughout the house.

What is the difference between the size of a bed and the size of a mattress?

While the terms bed and mattress are typically used interchangeably, the word “bed” can also sometimes refer to a pair instead of just one single mattress. In addition, the word “bed” could be used to mean either a mattress, box spring, bed frame, or headboard. These accessories do not have standard sizing and so it is unlikely that you will see dimensions for these items listed on manufacturer websites, although most mattresses will fit in a variety of these items.
